Secrets to success… I think not…

Time and again people have said there are secrets to being successful. I’m not disputing anyone; I am just saying it is not rocket science.

In Collin Powel’s words, “There are no secrets to success. It is a result of preparation, hard work, and learning from our mistakes.” Add self discipline in there and you will be good to go!

We live in a world where we want to spend more than we earn, to party more and work less,,I’m not entirely against that..I actually wish it were possible to have a two day week and 5 day weekend! We all want good things and we deserve them but we need to take up the culture of hard work, of working and actually earning the good things we want.

As much as there are a million and one self-help books on how to be successful or get rich quick or whatever, the honest truth is, success comes from hard work, focus and determination among other things. Yes, you can get lucky and have something handed down to you, but you will only be considered successful if you manage to keep whatever it is you were given or better still get profits from it,,,and that is where the work comes in.

Work, work, work, when you fall, learn from the fall then get up, take a break when you need to, when you get the opportunity, broaden your skills and knowledge, and keep working; that is how you become and stay successful……it takes work to get there and a whole lot more to stay there.

The next time you wake up in the morning and go on and on about how much you hate your job, think about the person who has no idea where their house rent or kids’ tuition is going to come from because they have no job,,,,then be thankful for yours and strategise on how best to upgrade yourself and get the better one that you would like to have! J

Don’t ask me how I know all this at 24; even I surprise myself at times! Let’s just say I am surrounded by people who constantly, directly and / or through their actions (sometimes unintentionally even) teach me these things and I’m glad I am learning and learning well.

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.” _ David Brinkley
